Leitz made the decision to abandon the M-cameras including the TTL M5 after the introduction of the M4-2 at the 1976 Photokina. Because of the rising costs of production in Wtzlar and the company's need for capital, demand persuaded Leitz to re-introduce M-cameras in 1978 with the M4-2 manufactured in Canada. About 95 Leica M4-2 cameras were made in 1977, but they bear serial numbers actually allotted for the Leica R3 Safari cameras. The Leica M4-2 was made between 1977 and 1980 in Canada.
